After a super busy June, Organize BC has had time to regroup and plan this summer. Most campaigns aren’t trying to grow their grassroots teams in July and August, and no one wants to compete with camping trips and music festivals to try to get organizers and volunteers to spend two days inside for a summer training weekend.
When we talk to organizers about what they might need, invariably, people say “the Fall would be great though! September? Or maybe October?” So, we’re running 5 Trainings this fall!
We kick off our fall trainings with a Core Training in Victoria at the University of Victoria on September 24 & 25. We’ll be in the Comox Valley with a Core Training on October 22 & 23 (location still to be determined), and then in Burnaby at the BCGEU headquarters (thanks BCGEU!) for a Core Training serving Metro Vancouver on October 29 & 30. Then we’re heading to the Kootenays November 5 & 6 , and we haven’t nailed down a date yet, but are hoping to be in Kelowna in November. We’ll update this post once we have those details!
Organize BC Core Trainings provide a holistic overview of the engagement organizing framework, based on five leadership practices: Telling Stories, Building Relationships, Structuring Teams, Strategizing and Taking Action. Participants learn a framework for empowering people in their community to make change over two fun and interactive days.
These trainings are for anyone interested in using grassroots engagement in their social change work. Staff organizers, engagement staff and volunteer coordinators at community organizations, labour unions, NGOs, social service agencies, as well as volunteers and community members wanting to run or join people-centred campaigns, are all great candidates. We recommend attending with a group from your organization where possible, as there is group work on how to apply the learning to your campaign.
If you want to send people from your campaign to one of these trainings, the best way to attend is contact Anna ([email protected]) for the Comox Valley and Kootenays trainings, and Peter ([email protected]) for the Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna trainings. Tell us how many people you would like to send, and why you think a Core Training is right for your organization. Registration cost is on a sliding scale based on organizational revenue. We'll ask what your organization’s revenue was for last year, and then can tell you the per person cost for your campaign.
